Verbier is about 2 hours from Lausanne, located in the south western Canton of Valais.
Verbier is also known as les 4 vallees, claims to have 410km of runs serviced by 93 lifts. The village of Verbier is at @ 1,500m and the highest elevation is Mt. Fort at 3,300m.
To my suprise, there is no direct rail access to Verbier.
As I readied my gear, I was reminded how carefree and undemanding preparing to ski has been at Sun Valley. Brother Brian and I have rented a locker at River Run for over a decaded -- skis, boots, goggles, gloves all ready to suit up and then a short walk to the lift. Alas, no such luxury for this trip. Thus, I have carefully (mininmalist) packed my rolling boot bag which together with my soft ski case, I am lugging up to the Lausanne gare, then a train ride to Martigny, transfer to a local train to Le Chable (the Cable) and finally transfer for a high speed gondola ride to the center of Verbier.
In contrast to the disjointed travel route to Verbier, booking a centrally located, comfortable hotel (The Bristol) and reserving advance lift tickets for 2 days has been seemlessly smooth. I have also booked a guide/instructor for 2 hours the 1st day. New skis and a new mountain suggest caution for my post 70 solo skiing.
More Verbier posts to follow. I am excited to to be on my way...to ski, whee!
fun to see you on the slopes, the snow looks beautiful. Glad you are taking care of your little toes!!!
