Let the Games and collateral fun begin! The 2020 Winter Youth Olympics started yesterday. The Winter Youth Olympic Games encompass 8 sports, 16 disciplines and 81 medal events. Lausanne is the host city for the Games -- though only 3 disciplines: Figure Skating, Ice Hockey, and Short Track Speed are being held in Lausanne. In addition, all podium award events are scheduled for Lausanne.
The Flon district of Lausanne is pulsating with Olympic sports energy and collateral sports activities. Most intriguing (to me) is an urban ski run, without snow. The Swiss are sports intensive and their engineering prowess is innovative. I have not decided if I was simply awestruck or agape as I watched several waves of kids trying to master the run with official Swiss ski instuctors (Note: no chair lifts for return runs..walk back up the hill in ski boots for a second run.)
Tomorrow I plan to return to the Flon for more spectator sport.
